Natural capital—the world’s stocks of land, forests, water, soil, minerals and biodiversity—underpins more than half of global GDP, yet only a fraction of its real value is reflected in today’s markets. The economic services nature provides are valued at roughly US $125 trillion per year and their depletion imposes annual costs estimated at US $2.7–5 trillion. More than 55% of global output—approximately $58 trillion—is directly exposed to those risks.
At the same time, new policy frameworks, corporate disclosure rules and investor demand are turning natural capital into an investable, yield-bearing asset class—whether through securitized carbon-reduction projects, water-rights portfolios or sustainably managed timber and farmland.
